The Problem in Praying to the Universe

The problem in praying to the universe is that the idea of the universe doesn’t really create a feeling of gratefulness, a feeling of giving back. What could we possibly give back to the universe? It’s so huge.

I don’t know how you see the universe but to me it feels like it’s cold, and dark, and way out there. Billions, and billions of stars far away. We’re this small part of it but what is there to give back to the universe?

If you think about the Earth, there is plenty to give back because so much is being given to us and we are part of the aliveness of the earth. Or think about Gods? Just the basic idea of a god, like the Hindu gods, or the one almighty God, there’s something to be grateful for and something to give back.

So the universe just is a problem that way. It think it’s one of the reasons that prayers to the universe end up feeling shallow and needy or greedy. We’re always think, “What does the universe want me to do?”

Well. What can we give back.
