To hold the truth before you, never be for or against.
This is a fabulous Zen saying, but it’s important to realize that this doesn’t mean to not be discerning at all. What it means to constantly question the belief system that sits in your mind.
Always stop and examine yourself. Don’t be for it. Don’t be against it.
Where is the point in the middle where clarity can actually see what is going on in a particular situation? We like to judge things good or bad. But you want to hold the truth as nothingness itself.
If you can hold that firmly before you, then you have to be willing to stop and watch yourself as your mind goes through the constant judgements of the day.
Sometimes you can go one way or the other. Back and forth between good and bad. You don’t want to be a horrible person.
Bad does exist
If somebody does something horrible to you. You can see the horribleness without clinging to the ‘for it’ or ‘against it’ bit. It’s a way to live your life with constant examination about what’s going on. With discrimination instead of belief.
