Non-duality and reality…
Lots of people are attracted to non-duality these days, and it’s turned into a really heady, you know, stuck in your head sort of thing. It takes so many words to attempt to define nothingness and to find Brahman. It gets really, really complicated.
I’ve noticed that it gets very disassociated; it’s like an excuse to disassociate yourself from life, which of course is a very attractive thing to want to do these days because life feels very complicated and bad.
But I’d like to offer a different suggestion: Non-duality is about reality. So as you’re doing your non-dual studies, ground yourself delightfully into reality.
That means work on your relationships, work on your income, work on your impact on the environment, work on all the things that you can do to interface as honestly and as heartfully with reality as you can.
There’s a couple of reasons for this:
One: What if you search forever and you don’t get anywhere? Well, in that case, if at least you’ve become a decent human being and you’ve done some good in the world, right?
But Two: Imagine you actually do something wild and completely wake up? Well, you’re going to wake up into the world that you inhabit, and it’s going to be wonderful that have been focused on your reality. You become a full ripe, mature person with healthy relationships. You’re going to have all sorts of skills that you can use because you’ve been interfacing with reality in the best way that you possibly can, and you’re going to be positioned to just bloom into an amazing being, to spread awareness through other people.
So, non-duality and reality. Don’t separate those two things.
