Perception

We all know that the sun doesn’t rise or set. What actually happens is that the sun is (relatively) stationary and the earth is spinning around.

The Zen of Astronomy

So there was this one modern mystic who gave us a great Zen Story. He said, “What would it look like if the sun actually rose and set.” He was looking at a sunset. He gestured at the sun and said, “It would look like this.”

“And what would it look like if the sun was standing still and the earth was turning?” Again he gestured at the sunset. “It would look like this.”

The point of the teaching is that perception is only perception. It doesn’t necessarily tell us the truth. This is the goal of Zen and Nonduality. To bring the perception down to a place of zero, a place with no fixed beliefs. From this place we are the masters of our lives because the way the world is perceived is not necessarily the truth.
