7. Trust in Human Nature is Fundamental for Awakening

Trust in our human nature is fundamental for awakening. 

Now I know, I’m saying the exact opposite of what you’ve heard. This is so important, because what we hear all the time is that enlightenment is difficult, that it takes lifetimes and lifetimes and lifetimes. But think about it. What we’ve also heard is that once you become enlightened, then you completely trust your human nature. You wake up to who you are.

So why not do it before hand?

Choosing Trust

Choosing to trust is going to make it that much easier. What I’m trying to do is tell a totally different story. I’m telling the story that this is your birthright. I mean, it is literally the first step in growing up. Realizing who you are. I am me. I am the point that is driving my body and my mind and my self through existence. I am the thing that participates in life. I am a what allows myself to participate with others. I am that little spark that decides things, that realizes things. I am me. I am who is looking out of my eyes.

So this is what we’re trying to find with meditation. Start by really really trusting that you are built correctly. You are designed to be awake. That is how the human being is designed.

So when you sit down in meditation, have that be as your base. Your firm base. You have to start with it as a chosen belief because you probably, deeply, don’t believe it is so.

So just decide.

And remember, it’s you who decides. Decide that “My being is fundamentally created correctly. My being is designed for being awake, for awakening.” Then sit down and close your eyes and see what happens.

Watching Yourself

Now, remember in our first lessons were instead of trying to move beyond your mind you watched it? Do that still. Watch yourself. Watch your emotions. Pay a little attention to yourself.

What we are trying to find is that who that is paying attention to yourself, right? So when you sit, enthusiastically, sympathetically, look at yourself.

Just sit in silence and see how different that is from your regular waking moments. See how different it is from any other meditation you tried to do before.

You are fundamentally created correctly.

We live in a very stressful world. So taking some time to relax, and be with yourself is very healthy and extremely illuminating.
