Why it’s important to know who you are

Knowing who you are is the point of non-duality. It’s the reason to practice mindfulness. It is enlightenment itself; it’s awakening itself—simply knowing who you are.

Why is that important? The answer, of course, is very simple. It’s because if you don’t know who you are, then you are at the mercy of the voice in your head. And the voice in your head has come from unreliable sources.

So, for instance, say that you are raised by a mother who constantly criticized you. You end up with that voice in your head. If you know who you are, it doesn’t really matter, because that is just a thing that happened and you are the master of your life.

If you don’t know who you are, then that voice dominates your whole life.

And it’s not just the fault of our mothers—it’s everything. It’s school, it’s society, it’s TV, it’s the YouTube video you watched before this one, and the one that you’re going to swipe to and watch next.

Your brain is a robot. It’s designed to literally repeat things. Occasionally it tries to put things into context and meaning, and project forward what’s gonna happen. But it’s basically just a robot. It’s repeating and repeating and repeating things that have happened.

If you know who you are, you know that you are not your mind. You are not the robot of your brain. You are the one who gets to decide.

So this is absolutely critical. And that’s why you need to constantly listen to different voices that constantly tell you: you can know who you are; who you are is simple.

In every single video I do I point to this message. And a lot of the non-duality teachers on YouTube do the same. Know that this is very, very important and make sure you watch videos that constantly tell you “you can know who you are”. They will come onto your feed simply by interacting with them.

The YouTube algorithm is kind of the way your brain works anyway. Whatever you feed will grow.

So make sure you constantly listen to videos telling you who you are.
